Let Nick Tell You What Matters Most...
Quality When it comes to construction, Nick Johnson knows what matters most and that is quality, creativity and accountability. These are his goals. These are his priorities. These words describe Nick Johnson.
Growing up in Winfield, Iowa, Nick fondly remembers his grandfather's Chevrolet dealership, established in
1929 - - the first in his community. As a little boy, Nick shined hubcaps and dusted off fenders of those beautiful
brand new automobiles! Nick's grandfather taught him the meaning of hard work. "He expected me to do a thorough job washing those cars and demanded quality results of a 10 year old," Nick remembers. That hard work ethic and passion for quality has stayed with Nick through to his present position as president of Nicholas Homes. In fact, he says, "From an 1800 ft2 house to a 5000 ft2 house, it doesn't matter how small or how large, it's got to be quality."
Creativity! After high school, Nick enrolled in Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
where he studied architectural design. Upon graduation, he was quickly involved in every aspect of construction from operating heavy excavating equipment to framing, to roofing and carpentry. "My favorite part of the actual construction of a home is the framing." Nick proudly admits, "It gives me a great feeling of accomplishment and achievement when everything works together with precision." It's an attitude Nick still carries into each home he builds today.
In college, Nick learned the fine art of design and to this day he enjoys the creativity that building homes allows. His clients admit that he is a good listener, and when they are perplexed about the many choices during
I the building process, he graciously steps in with his creative ideas and suggestions.
Accountability In 1982, Nick moved to the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama and for 10 years, he worked in the aluminum die-cast industry. He started out as a designer, but quickly developed an aptitude for management. For several years, he was in Financial Management and ultimately became the Plant Manager. "This time of my life really taught me the importance of knowing your numbers," says Nick, ''as well as the value of on-the job leadership."
After work hours, Nick started building small homes in the area, primarily to be used as rental income. Already, Nick was holding himself accountable for his retirement. He did such a great job building these homes, and his creative concepts were so successful, that others started asking Nick to build their personal custom homes.
On the job site, Nick holds his sub-contractors accountable: for quality workmanship, for prompt response to repairs, for keeping the worksite clean, for showing up on time, for doing the best and being the best. Nick is quick to point out, "I think holding people accountable is the number one reason for success."
